Artefakt emerged in 2012 with 'Mirror Society' on Field Records, establishing a blueprint for deep entrancing sound experiences that would define their artistic journey. Established by Nick Lapien and Robin Koek, the duo positioned themselves onwards in the scene through a signature of melancholic, hypnotic voodoo music. After 14 years of collaborative work, the project now continues as a solo endeavor under Nick Lapien's direction from late 2025 onwards. The sound remains pensive with deep, rich textures; long track lengths—often six-minutes-plus—give Artefakt an expansive framework in which to make small changes of texture and tone, creating cerebral, balanced atmospheres that absorb and engage. "Sometimes it just takes a short element, like the sound of a falling drop of water, and from this recording extract the rhythm and use it as a starting point," says Artefakt. "It's a very organic way of creating new material." As a live act, Artefakt has performed all across Europe, North America, and Asia, the analog-heavy set a must-see for fans of melodic and deeply emotive techno. Drawing on a deep love for collecting records, Artefakt also performs as a DJ, crafting long, hypnotic narratives laced with exclusive material and records from an expansive collection, old and new. Pioneering a meticulous and layered sound through renowned Dutch imprints Field and Delsin Records, an expansive catalog emerged, placing Artefakt at the center of soundscape-informed techno. Building on a decade of signature sound records, Artefakt continues to explore collaborative creation with artists close to the project, such as Claudio PRC, KMRU, and Maayan Nidam, crafting records based on studio improvisation and featured through the imprint De Stijl. While honoring the foundational vision established during the duo years, Lapien now explores new creative territories within Artefakt's established sonic framework.
